Forged In Light: Photography Featuring Yousuf Karsh

Yousuf Karsh’s photography style was defined by black-and-white imagery, dramatic theatrical lighting, and strong contrasts of light and shadow. Influenced by painting masters like Rembrandt and Velázquez, he focused on capturing the true character of his subjects, often in their own environments rather than a studio. Using a large-format camera and tungsten lights for flattering detail, Karsh relied on his own developing formulas and worked with minimal assistance to maintain intimacy and authenticity in his portraits.
